Midheaven Records continues its run of firsts in 2021 with ‘Shifgrethor / Konstant Kemmer’, the debut of Eora/Sydney-based producer Mx-Ai (they/them). The last decade has seen Mx-Ai move from playing in bands, to no-input mixing, to chopping samples and programming drums—a habitual experimentation both integrated with living and consciously auto-didactive. Years of quietly working away have resulted in a warped bass music sound, drawing upon the sensibilities of musique concrète, jungle, dub and dancehall. Taking their names from concepts in Ursula K. Le Guin’s ‘The Left Hand of Darkness’, ‘Shifgrethor’ and ‘Konstant Kemmer’ are a small glimpse into a larger world of sounds yet to be heard, where synths cling like vapour to structural beats, meticulously grooving and articulate. Astute sound design makes tangible a feeling suspended between excitement and anxiety, with sweeps of FX and minute rhythmic shifts keeping things on the move, ever-curious and rolling. This is an exciting statement of intent from a gifted artist.
